Hello All,

Sorry to inundate you with email, but with so many tournaments right around
the corner it is important to give everyone a heads up.

Junior Olympic Qualifiers will be held on December 3 and 4th at AFC for all
three weapons. YEAH! This makes it easy for everyone to participate and
help out.

In order to fence at Junior Olympics, you must qualify through the Arizona
Division. For those who qualify from the Arizona Division, Junior Olympics
will be in Hartford Connecticut February 17 - 20th. There are two events
for each weapon - Under 20 Junior and Under 17 Cadet. Men's and women's
events will be fenced separately.

Some of the questions I have been getting lately have been about
participation and fencing level. Let me take a minute to clarify a few
issues about Junior Olympic Qualifiers. (Pia, if I get anything wrong,
please don't hesitate to correct me.)

First, the number of those who qualify is directly related to the number of
fencers who fence in the qualifiers. So for example, if 12 people show up
for Junior Foil, three people will qualify out of the twelve (three is the
minimum number who qualify per event). If however, 13 people fence in the
Junior Foil qualifier, the division can send 4 people in Junior Foil to JOs.
So numbers count. The number of those who qualify go up as the number of
participants go up. So, even if you don't think you are ready for Junior
Olympics, but would like to fence, please come and fence. Your
participation may make the difference for a fencer who really wants to go to
JOs.

The flip side of that is that if you know for sure you are not going to JOs,
is it fair for you to take a spot from someone who will go? This is a
question that has been heavily debated. If, however, money is the issue,
the AFC Fundraising committee is working to help with JO expenses. And, our
travel agent is working to get us a group airfare rate and great hotel
rates, so we are working hard to make the trip as affordable as possible for
all of those who qualify from AFC.

Men's and Women's events are separated. So, If only three women show up for
an event, then all three automatically qualify. If four women show up for
an event, the event will be fenced and the top three women will qualify.

To fence in the Junior/U20 events you must have been born between 1986 -
1992*

To fence in the Cadet/U17 events you must have been born between 1989 -
1992*

*Fencers must be 13 years old by January 1 of the current season. For Junior
events, fencers must be under 20 years old as of January 1 of the

current season. For Cadet events, fencers must be under 17 years old as of
January 1 of the current season.

Event times haven't been posted yet, but you can watch
http://www.azfencingdivision.net/events.php and I'm sure the event times
will be posted soon.

We will have coaching sign up sheets in the back of the lesson schedules for
each coach. Please sign up for coaching as soon as you know if you are
participating in JO qualifiers so that our coaches can plan their time
accordingly.

One of the fundraisers we have planned is to sell food at the JO Qualifiers.
Johna Martinez has offered to make tamales and nachos to sell and we are
going to make homemade ice cream. If you would like to help with the
fundraiser by helping make tamales in advance or manning the food table,
please let Sandra or Johna know.

If you have any other questions that haven't been addressed, please send
them and we will track down the answers.

Thanks!
