AFC List Qualifying Paths to Summer Nationals

Hello All!
We have been getting a lot of questions about how you qualify for Summer
Nationals. Here is (I hope) a simple explanation. If you have any
questions, please feel free to email or if anything here is incorrect,
(Drew or Pia) please correct me and I will post the correct. The
information posted here comes from the USFA 2005-2006 Athletes Handbook
which can be downloaded from http://www.usfencing.org/do/filePreview?id=1191
Youth (Y)
*Y10*, and qualify by fencing in an RYC or Super RYC. The schedules for
RYCs are located at http://www.usfaryc.org/schedule.htm
To fence in Y10 fencers must be at least 7 years old as of December 31
2005, and no more than10 years old as of December 31 2005.
*Y12* fencers qualify by fencing in an RYC or Super RYC. The schedules
for RYCs are located at http://www.usfaryc.org/schedule.htm
To fence in Y12 fencers must be at least 9 years old as of December 31
2005, and no more than 12 years old as of December 31 2005.
/Please note, you can only qualify for Y10 and Y12 by fencing in an
event that has been sanctioned as an RYC or Super RYC by the USFA
(United States Fencing Association)./
*Y14* fencers qualify for Summer Nationals by placing in the top 25% of
the fencer's Division Youth 14 qualifying competition. The Division
qualifiers will be held on April 29th and 30th in Mesa. The times have
not been posted, but you can watch

for the details. To fence in Y14, fencers must be at least 11 years
old as of December 31 2005, and no more than 14 years old as of December
31 2005.
*Cadet* (under 16) fencers qualify for Summer Nationals by placing in
the top 25% of the fencer's Division Cadet qualifying competition. The
Division qualifiers will be held on April 29th and 30th in Mesa. The
times have not been posted, but you can watch

To fence Cadet, fencers must be 13 years old as of December 31 of 2006
and must be fencers must be under 17 years old as of January 1 of the 2006.
*Juniors *(under 19) fencers qualify for Summer Nationals by placing in
the top 25% of the fencer's /Sectional /Junior qualifying competition.
The Sectional qualifiers will be held on April 1st and 2nd. More
information and registration information is available from

To fence Juniors, fencers must be fencers must be 13 years old as of
December 31 2006. For Junior events, fencers must be under 20
years old as of January 1 of the 2006.
*Division III *
Fencers must have a classification in the weapon of "D", "E" or
Unclassified at the time of the qualifying competition AND must be 13 as
of December 31, 2005. Fencers with a classification of C, B, or A
cannot fence Division III. More information is available at

Fencers can qualify for Division III by qualifying first for Division II
or by placing in the top 25% of the fencer's Division qualifying
competition for Division III. OR, if the fencer qualifies for either
Junior (under 19) or Cadet (under 16) they will automatically qualify
for Division III in the weapon qualified for.
*Division II*
Fencers must have a classification in the weapon of "C", "D", "E" or
Unclassified at the time of the qualifying competition AND must be 13 as
of December 31, 2005. More information is available at

classification of B, or A cannot fence Division II. Fencers can qualify
for Division II placing in the top 25% of the fencer's Division
qualifying competition for Division II. OR, if the fencer qualifies
for either Junior (under 19) or Cadet (under 16) they will automatically
qualify for Division II in the weapon qualified for.
*Division IA
*Fencers must be 13 years old before January 1 of 2005 AND place in the
top 25% (with a minimum of 8) at the current season Senior Section
qualifying competition. This will be held on April 1st and 2nd. More

Please note, I haven't address the issue of having national points,
because this only applies to a handful of our fencers and if you have
national points, you know about this process. This information is
intended to help new fencers who haven't been to Summer Nationals.
