Prescott Fall Classic
This annual event over Labor Day weekend in cool
Prescott is ideal for younger fencers as well as more
experienced ones. For fencers in the 12 and under
(Y12) and 14 and under (Y14) age groups, Prescott is
an easy way to start competing out of town. For more
information, talk to your coach or check

Fun Fencing Tournament
AFCs first fun fencing tournament of the season
will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the club. For
beginners with several lessons under your belt, its a
no-pressure way to get a taste of competition. Well
post entry sheets at the club for foil, epee and sabre
events. Ask Florin or Adrian about the event.
On the strip with the Guv
Our epee fencers Chris Rapa and Shaun McGonigle will
be introducing Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano at the
annual Profiles of Success luncheon Sept. 7. The
luncheon is one of the largest of the year in the
Valley and recognizes Hispanic community leaders. The
organizers wanted some eye-catching swordplay to
herald the governors arrival onstage for her speech.
Chris and Shaun will give it to them and get AFCs
name out in front of an influential group. Thanks
guys!
Speaking of getting our name out
.
We want to see AFC continue to thrive, so an informal
group of fencing parents has been meeting to work on
recruiting and retaining members. Were focusing on
promoting the club in schools and other venues, and
ensuring that prospective and existing members get the
information they need in person, over the phone or on
the Web. Heres whats in the works:
--A fencing parent staffing the desk for a couple of
hours every weeknight. We do have openings on Monday
and Thursday. Email Brahm Resnik
(brahmresnik at yahoo.com) if you can handle one of those
nights.
--A brochure for distribution in middle and high
schools, and among home school parents. Beth Rapa and
Rachelle Arama are working on that.
--An upgraded Web site to help people find AFC and see
what the club has to offer. Heather Hartzell-Robbins
is leading the way there.
Were just getting started. If youd like to
participate, please contact any of those parents.
Dues we need em
A friendly reminder that AFC membership dues are due
by the first of the month. We prefer payment by check,
with the fencers name on it. Please place all
payments in the mailbox in the lobby.
Comings and goings
Two of our epee fencers are heading off to college.
Bobby Cottam is entering Arizona State University on a
Flinn Foundation scholarship. Jana Arredondo heads off
to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, also on
scholarship. Fencers like Bobby and Jana are what AFC
is all about committed to fencing, committed to
academics and great people. Our best wishes to both of
them.
THANK YOU for your continued support of your fencing
club.
If you have news or photos youd like to share, please
